Local Animal Shelters Need Your Help

With the recent impact of Hurricane Sandy, and the holiday season among us, the local animal shelters are in need of donations. Morris K9 Campus is currently holding a Pet Food Drive, in the lobby, until December 14th.

Your donations will be going to local shelters and rescue groups that have felt the negative impacts of Hurricane Sandy. These shelters are in need of critical supplies for the animals they currently have as well as the ones they hope to help during this holiday season. Donations will be distributed to them during the last two weeks in December.

Noah’s Ark

This shelter suffered a 12-day power loss, which also left them without running water for that time. They are now up and running again, however they are still in need of donations.

Eleventh Hour Rescue

They are glad to report that all of their animals made it safe through the storm, including both shelter and foster dogs. The shelter did not have hot water during the storm. They are seeking food donations for both dog and cats.

Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter

This nonprofit is seeking donations for their cats. According to their Facebook page, they are in great need of, clean large towels, snoozy small cat bumper beds, fleece throws/blankets, as well as non-clumping cat litter and cat toys.

Randolph Animal Pound

This pound is in need of the following items: dog runs and rabbit hutches are needed so that we can help rescue more rabbits, blankets and small rugs, used clean ones are fine, as well as toys for cats and dogs.

Purrfect Pals, Inc.

Purrfect Pals, Inc. is a cat rescue located in East Hanover, NJ. At the current time, both kitty litter and cat food is appreciated.

So stop by and drop off donations, bins are located in the lobby. Any donation will help these animals in need.

Dog and Cat Food (Canned or Dry)

Scoopable Litter

Kitten and Puppy Food (Canned)

As well as the items that specific shelters have requested.

A Small Dog with a Big Personality

Someone's trash became my treasure! That is what I say to myself every October when I celebrate bringing Sammy, my Dachshund, into my life.

Having worked with the Morris Family for 12 years I have met and cared for dogs of every shape and size, personality and color. In 2007 I already had 2 rescues, our German Shepherd Andrew and Shepherd-Mix Livvy when I decided I wanted to add a third rescue dog to the family. I wanted it to be small dog with a big personality, enter the Dachshund! I combed petfinder for months until one Friday, Samson appeared on my screen at the Staten Island Animal Care and Control Center. I called the number provided and asked how old and if he had been temperament tested. The woman on the phone said he was 1.5 to 2 years old and was listed as "No concern". I immediately called my husband and told him, "I think we found our dog."

After my work shift ended at the Morris Animal Inn at 4:00pm, I hopped in my car, and drove to see if he still was there. I walked into the small office area surrounded by cages of kittens (I had to say hi to them all) and asked if I could see Samson. I immediately took him outside of his cage and went for a walk. I sat on the ground and without hesitation he jumped in my lap curled up in ball and stayed there while I made the call to my husband to bring our 2 other dogs down to meet, the re-named Sammy, and next addition to the family.

Over the course of the next few weeks we got to know him better. We discovered that he is not house trained, doesn't love strangers, can be quite loud, and LOVES food! Needless to say I was a little shocked at how much work I had ahead of me. Sammy wasn't going anywhere so we better have a plan. We prioritized what was most important (housetraining first) and devised a routine based on work schedules and budget.

Moving forward 5 years later I joined the staff at Morris K9 Campus and Sammy went through all the levels of pet training and currently does agility, which we both love, all driven by getting his favorite reward, TREATS!! I have accepted the fact that while he would never harm someone, he would rather not have attention from strangers and doesn't love every dog he meets, I work on this everyday with patience, love, and training. I feel like he knew when he met me, my husband and his canine brother Andrew and sister Livvy that this was his chance (or he just really wanted out of the shelter because he behaved like a saint during introductions!!) He is a product of not enough nurture, not nature. While I don't know what happened in his past, like where he came from, it is pretty obvious that he was not socialized with people or housetrained. I do know he lived with another dog so he at least has skills when it comes to communicating with his canines. He is one of the many reasons I come to work every day with the same passion I had 12 years ago when I decided I wanted a career with animals.

ALLIE FINISHED HER BOOT CAMP CLASS BUT SHE IS STILL ON OUR MINDS

It's been a week since we've said goodbye to Allie and we miss her already. She is still looking for her forever home. Who wouldn't want a dog that:

• Can sit and down stay

  

  Loose leash exercises with Allie.

  
• Has a great recall or "come"
• Walks calmly on a leash
• Works for toys and food
• Could be a cool agility dog
• Loves everyone
• Gets along with other dogs

We really think Allie is a catch and so should you! ALLIE'S LAST WEEK OF BOOT CAMP

We've heard some wonderful news that there is interest in Allie for adoption! We are all crossing our fingers that she will find her fur-ever home. To continue to further her chances the staff at MK9 wanted to give our reasons why we think Allie is so great:

We love that Allie is so happy to see us when she gets dropped off in the morning, ready for a fun day of training because:

- She loves people she doesn't know unconditionally

- She has a great combination of a sweet manner but playful personality

- She is so affectionate and gentle

- She has joyful puppy-like play especially when she chases tennis balls as if they were bunnies in the grass

"Allie is such a pleasure to work with.." says Morris K9 Campus Trainer Robin Lash. "Most of her success in training is due to that fact that she is such a smart eager-to-please dog!" 

Since Allie might be meeting new dogs as part of her adoption process, we want to show a video of Allie nicely and appropriately greeting another dog. We have loved getting to know her!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ALLIE

Allie's morning routine consists of playing with her friend and fellow Boot Camp member, Fergie, the Portuguese Water Dog. These two ladies had an instant connection. They enjoy starting their morning with playtime and fetch with tennis balls.

Next up is training time:

We like to teach all dog's to wait or "stay" at the door until they are released to go outside. It's a wonderful way for your dog to learn that they shouldn't bolt outside without you allowing them to do so. Nice going, Allie!

Some of the things we have been working on with Allie is a good recall or "come," one of the most important commands you can teach your dog. Allie thinks it's a really fun game!

To continue to increase her exercise and fitness, Allie works out on the treadmill. This is a fabulous way to keep her active, stimulated, and tired.
